New Beginnings: Breakups Aren’t the End of your Love Life

There’s no sugar coating it: breakups are hard. If you ended a serious relationship or if you’ve just been dumped, it’s normal to feel lost for a while. You might even think that it makes sense avoiding relationships altogether for the foreseeable future. In fact, a break up can be a blessing in disguise that can see you welcome new beginnings into your life.

Rediscover yourself

To some extent, it can be very sweet when a couple is in sync and that they do everything together. However, we pointed out in ‘Getting Back in the Saddle After a Bad Breakup’ that it’s important not to lose your sense of self in the face of a relationship, no matter how good it is. Alternatively, getting out of a toxic relationship that doesn’t allow you to flourish as a person can also be a liberating experience. A breakup, therefore, is the perfect time to start rediscovering who you are as an individual, one who is not reliant on someone else. This respite will give you the time you need to reflect on past actions and learn from them.

Try new things

In your quest for self-discovery, make it a point to step out of your comfort zone a la Eat Pray Love. In this memoir-turned-biographical film, author Elizabeth Gilbert embarks on a trip around the world after her divorce. Her travels force Gilbert out of her comfort zone, and she learns more about herself in the process. So don’t be afraid to try new things! You don’t have to travel across the globe to do this. You can simply pick up a hobby that can introduce you to a new passion and the community behind it.

Start taking care of yourself again

Say what you will about her clan, but Khloe Kardashian is a good example of what you need to do after a break up. Women’s Health Magazine stated that her famous ‘revenge body’ is a result of her breakup with previous husband, Lamar Odom. The youngest Kardashian sister said that aside from improving her fitness, working out was also a form of therapy. It’s normal to let ourselves go when we’re in a serious relationship but that can often become a source of insecurity. Self-care can help you feel more confident in your skin and attract positive energy from positive people.

Don’t listen to negative comments

When couples are very open about their relationship, family, friends, and spectators will always have something to say. It’s what’s happening to former couple Dani Dyer and Jack Fincham. Dyer recently opened up about their break-up in an interview with Cosmopolitan. The 22-year old celeb, who first appeared in the hit reality TV show Love Island, had nothing but nice words to say about her now ex-beau. She asks that the public give them their space as they move on especially when her and Jack were such a popular couple. In fact, they were the most by far the most likeable finalists on Love Island and the most followed on social media. But even if you don’t have celebrity status, at the end of the day, tune out everyone else and decide on your own if the other person deserves another chance or if it’s time to let go.

Make space for people who care about you

There’s nothing wrong with deciding to close the door on a person who’s hurt you many times. You should only make time for those who care about you. One example is Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland who broke up with an abusive boyfriend and is now in a loving and nurturing relationship with The Bachelorette alum Wells Adams.
